Meme lore
What is the Good Guy Greg meme?
Good Guy Greg (GGG) is an Advice Animal meme featuring a smiling young man with a cigarette, used to praise small acts of everyday kindness and considerate behavior. The joke is celebrating someone who does the right thing without seeking credit - turning down the music, holding a door, or quietly helping others.
Origin & history
The meme originated on 4chan's /b/ board in late 2010, where users posted a stock-style photo of a cheerful young man and captioned it with examples of considerate behavior. It quickly migrated to Reddit's r/AdviceAnimals, where it was formalized as 'Good Guy Greg' alongside other Advice Animal characters like Scumbag Steve and Success Kid.
By early 2011, GGG was one of the most popular positive memes on Reddit and Tumblr. The format typically pairs top text describing a small thoughtful act with bottom text showing the person's humble or selfless attitude. Unlike many internet memes built on cynicism, Good Guy Greg celebrated ordinary decency and became a shorthand for 'this person is genuinely nice.'
