Meme lore
What is the Communist Bugs Bunny meme?
Communist Bugs Bunny is a meme featuring a screenshot of Bugs Bunny from Looney Tunes edited with a red Soviet-style filter, often holding a carrot like a cigar. It is used to jokingly claim shared ownership of something or to frame ordinary items as communal property.
Origin & history
The image comes from a frame in the 1959 Looney Tunes short 'People Are Bunny,' showing Bugs Bunny in a relaxed pose. Internet users added a red tint and Soviet aesthetic, turning the cartoon rabbit into a tongue-in-cheek symbol of collectivism.
In July 2019, the edited image spread rapidly across subreddits like r/MemeEconomy and r/HistoryMemes, often captioned with variations of 'No, this is our meme.' The format became a go-to joke for sharing content, claiming group ownership of jokes, or playfully mocking communist rhetoric in everyday situations.
