Meme lore
What is the Sideshow Bob Rake meme?
The Sideshow Bob Rake meme shows the Simpsons villain stepping on a garden rake and getting hit in the face by the handle - a gag repeated over and over in the 'Cape Feare' episode. It represents repetitive self-inflicted failure: making the same obvious mistake again and again.
Origin & history
In 'Cape Feare,' a parody of Cape Fear, Sideshow Bob is released from prison and tracks Bart Simpson to a houseboat. While walking across a parking lot strewn with rakes, Bob steps on one and the handle swings up into his face - a slapstick beat the writers repeat multiple times in a row.
The gag became one of The Simpsons' most beloved running jokes and later a standalone meme for situations where someone keeps walking into the same trap. Online it is used for everything from debugging loops to relationship patterns to political commentary about repeating mistakes.
