Origin & history
This screenshot is from The Simpsons Season 9, Episode 18, "This Little Wiggy," which originally aired on March 22, 1998. In the episode, Marge pushes Bart to spend time with Ralph, highlighting Ralph's well-meaning but socially awkward personality.
The image of Ralph waving blankly in front of school lockers spread on Reddit and Twitter as a reaction to joining new groups, showing up uninvited, or responding to complex situations with cheerful cluelessness. It pairs naturally with captions about "helping" despite making things worse or not understanding the context at all.
