Meme lore
What is the Homer Bushes meme?
Homer Bushes (also called Homer Backs Into Hedge) is a reaction meme from The Simpsons showing Homer Simpson slowly reversing into a green hedge until only his wide-eyed face peeks through the leaves. It expresses the urge to quietly disappear from an awkward, embarrassing, or uncomfortable situation.
Origin & history
The scene appears in The Simpsons Season 5 episode "Homer Loves Flanders," which first aired on May 5, 1994. After an awkward encounter with neighbor Ned Flanders, Homer wordlessly backs into a hedge and vanishes, leaving only his eyes visible - a perfect visual gag for wanting to escape social discomfort.
A GIF of the sequence spread across Twitter, Reddit, and messaging apps in the 2010s as a reaction image for cringe moments, bad conversations, and responsibilities people would rather avoid. The cropped still format works as a single-frame meme for captioning whatever situation the poster wants to quietly exit without confrontation.
