Meme lore
What is the Leonardo Dicaprio Drinking meme?
The Leonardo DiCaprio Drinking meme is a still of DiCaprio as Calvin Candie from Django Unchained, smirking while holding a stemmed glass at a plantation dinner. It conveys smug amusement, condescension, or a 'cheers to that disaster' reaction while someone digs their own hole.
Origin & history
The image is captured during the tense dinner scene at Candyland plantation in Django Unchained, where Calvin Candie laughs at his own cruel joke while guests react around him. Tumblr users first turned the frame into a Photoshop exploitable in November 2017 by replacing the glass with items like Monster Energy drinks.
The unedited still went mainstream on Reddit in mid-2020, where captions paired Candie's smug grin with everyday 'gotcha' moments - bad takes, self-owns, and situations where the poster watches chaos unfold with a drink in hand. The drink prop became a signature detail that meme makers love to swap for ironic effect.
