Meme lore
What is the Leonardo Dicaprio Cheers meme?
The Leonardo DiCaprio Cheers meme (also called the Great Gatsby Toast) is a still of DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby raising a champagne glass during a lavish party in The Great Gatsby (2013). It is used to toast wins, give understated approval, or sarcastically celebrate something with classy confidence.
Origin & history
The toast comes from Baz Luhrmann's 2013 film The Great Gatsby, when Jay Gatsby introduces himself to Nick Carraway amid fireworks and opulent party chaos. The moment first spread online through the film's December 2012 trailer, then exploded after the movie's May 2013 release when Tumblr users paired it with Fergie's party anthem and reaction posts.
By mid-2013 the still was on Meme Generator and BuzzFeed, and it has remained a durable reaction format ever since - especially around New Year's, milestones, and any moment that calls for a restrained 'cheers' rather than over-the-top hype.
