Meme lore
What is the Financial Support Bernie meme?
Financial Support Bernie is a meme using a still from Bernie Sanders' 2019 presidential campaign video, showing him outdoors in a winter coat earnestly asking for financial support. People replace the original plea with humorous requests for anything they need repeatedly - from grocery money to homework extensions to emotional validation.
Origin & history
The image comes from a fundraising video Bernie Sanders posted on December 8, 2019, during his second run for the Democratic presidential nomination. Filmed outdoors in snowy Vermont, Sanders looked at the camera and said, 'I am once again asking for your financial support in the fight for Medicare for All.' His familiar winter coat and dead-serious delivery made the moment instantly memeable.
The meme exploded across Twitter and Reddit in January 2020 when users began replacing 'financial support' with everyday pleas - borrowed chargers, cheaper cheese, relationship advice. The format spread beyond politics into general humor about repeatedly asking for the same thing. It remains a go-to template for any earnest, campaign-style request delivered with complete seriousness.
