Meme lore
What is the Grandma Finds Internet meme?
Grandma Finds the Internet is an Advice Animal meme featuring an elderly woman with a shocked, bewildered expression at her computer. It jokes about older people - or anyone out of touch - encountering modern internet culture, slang, or technology for the first time with naive confusion or alarm.
Origin & history
Grandma Finds the Internet followed the Advice Animal format popular on Reddit in the early 2010s, using a stock-style photo of a senior woman reacting to her screen. The top text typically sets up what she discovered - Facebook drama, a viral video, internet slang - while the bottom text delivers her innocent or horrified response.
The meme tapped into a broader genre of generational gap humor: younger users joking about explaining TikTok, texting etiquette, or meme culture to relatives. It also worked in reverse, with captions where 'Grandma' accidentally understands something better than expected. The format spread across Reddit, Tumblr, and Facebook before Advice Animals declined in popularity, but the template remains useful for any 'just learned about the internet' reaction.
