Meme lore
What is the Living In 1984 Calendar Reveal meme?
Living in 1984 is an editorial-cartoon-derived exploitable template by political cartoonist Gary Varvel. In the original January 2021 cartoon, a man reacts to Donald Trump's permanent Twitter suspension and the removal of the Parler app from major app stores before pulling away a December 2020 calendar page and revealing January 1984. The visual invokes George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four and frames a contemporary event as evidence of a return to an authoritarian or heavily censored society. In meme adaptations, the speech bubble is commonly replaced with a new complaint, prediction, or punch
Origin & history
The template originated as a Gary Varvel editorial cartoon rather than as an anonymous stock image. Its original premise was a conservative political response to the suspension of Donald Trump's Twitter account and the deplatforming of Parler: the characters interpret those events as signs that society has entered Orwell's 1984. The supplied meme version retains the cartoon's key visual structure but removes the original dialogue, leaving a blank speech bubble for customization. The date transition from December 2020 to January 1984 is a rhetorical time jump, not a literal calendar sequence; it is designed to connect a current event with Orwell's fictional dystopia. The image later spread as a remixable meme, including parodies that treated the comparison skeptically or applied it to unrelated examples of perceived censorship, bans, surveillance, platform moderation, and cultural change.
