Meme lore
What is the Picard Facepalm meme?
The Picard Facepalm meme shows Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) from Star Trek: The Next Generation burying his face in his hand in disbelief. It is one of the internet's default reactions to stupidity, bad decisions, or painfully obvious mistakes.
Origin & history
Patrick Stewart's facepalm as Captain Picard was captured during 'Déjà Q,' when the omnipotent trickster Q returns and Picard reacts with weary disbelief. The moment perfectly captured a universal feeling - watching something go wrong that should have been preventable.
The image spread through early forums, LiveJournal, and image macros before becoming a staple reaction GIF and meme on Reddit and Twitter. Alongside the 'Facepalm' entry in Know Your Meme culture, Picard's version became the dignified, authoritative facepalm - less cartoonish rage, more 'I cannot believe I have to explain this again.'
