Meme lore
What is the Bilbo Why Shouldn’t I Keep It meme?
This two-panel Lord of the Rings template shows Bilbo Baggins examining the One Ring and then visibly rationalizing his desire to keep it. The top caption introduces a tempting justification, while the bottom caption delivers the defiant or self-serving conclusion.
Origin & history
The stills depict Ian Holm as Bilbo Baggins handling the One Ring in Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001). Online meme adaptations commonly pair the two expressions with variations of “After all, why not?” and “Why shouldn’t I?” to frame an internal argument about keeping or doing something questionable.
