Meme lore
What is the LOTR: They Were Once Men meme?
The upper panel shows Frodo Baggins staring ahead with Sam, Merry, and Pippin behind him; the lower panel cuts to Aragorn answering with a solemn, weary look. The format turns a direct question about an alarming sight into an explanatory reveal, so it works best when the answer reframes the subject as a corrupted, former, or unexpectedly changed version of itself.
Origin & history
The template uses film stills of Frodo Baggins and Aragorn from The Lord of the Rings. Its familiar wording recalls Aragorn's explanation that the Ringwraiths were once human kings; the exact original edited template and first meme use have not been verified.
