Meme lore
What is the Cow Wearing a GPS Collar meme?
This template shows a real cow equipped with a GPS collar used to track the animal’s location. The oversized device creates an instantly readable contrast between an ordinary farm animal and modern monitoring technology, making the image useful for captions about surveillance, hyperconnectivity, precision agriculture, location tracking, or treating simple problems with elaborate technical systems.
Origin & history
The source image is an agricultural research photograph rather than a purpose-built reaction image. The USDA Agricultural Research Service identifies it as a cow wearing a GPS collar used to track the animal’s location and credits Dave Ganskopp. The archive places the image in its August 2002 photo collection, although the available catalog page does not provide a fuller field-study context. The meme treatment appears to come from later cropping and captioning, with the plain upper background making it easy to repurpose as a generic animal-reaction template.
