Meme lore
What is the Grandpa Simpson Yelling At Cloud meme?
Grandpa Simpson Yelling at Cloud is a meme from The Simpsons showing Abraham Simpson shaking his fist and yelling at a cloud in the sky. It represents cranky, irrational complaints about modern life — getting mad at things that cannot hear you or change, like new technology, trends, or anything "kids these days" do.
Origin & history
In "The Old Man and the Key," Grampa Simpson's futile anger at a cloud is reported in the Springfield Shopper with the deadpan headline "Old Man Yells at Cloud." The visual of an elderly man shaking his fist at the sky perfectly captured performative, misdirected outrage.
The meme exploded on Reddit and Twitter in the mid-2010s as a label for anyone complaining about harmless modern changes — new social media features, updated app designs, slang, or cultural shifts. It is often used self-deprecatingly ("I'm old man yells at cloud about this") or to mock others who are upset over nothing. The phrase "old man yells at cloud" entered broader internet vocabulary as shorthand for cranky resistance to change.
