Meme lore
What is the Netflix Are You Still Watching meme?
Netflix Are You Still Watching is a meme based on Netflix's idle prompt that appears after several episodes play without interaction, asking if the viewer is still there. It is used to joke about binge-watching, loneliness, procrastination, or doing something obsessively for hours without stopping.
Origin & history
Netflix rolled out continuous playback and the 'Are you still watching?' confirmation in the mid-2010s as it shifted toward serialized binge-watching rather than weekly appointment viewing. The prompt was designed to prevent accidental streaming but became instantly memeable because it implicitly accused viewers of watching too long.
Social media users began screenshotting or recreating the dialog box to joke about falling down rabbit holes - rewatching the same show, scrolling for hours, or staying up all night on a guilty pleasure. The format spread on Twitter, Reddit, and Instagram as a relatable shorthand for losing track of time.
