Meme lore
What is the I Can Quit Anytime meme?
The 'I Can Quit Anytime' meme (also called Stress Possum or Smoking Possum) shows a photoshopped opossum sitting at a wooden table, holding a cigarette and drinking from a styrofoam cup through a bendy straw. It mocks denial about mild addictions and burnout while insisting everything is fine.
Origin & history
The image is a digital manipulation combining a real opossum photo with added cigarette and drink props. It spread through 'trash animal' meme communities that anthropomorphize opossums and raccoons in chaotic, relatable scenarios.
The caption format 'I can quit anytime I want' - often followed by a narrator line like 'He could not' - became a standard two-part joke structure on Twitter and Reddit. It works for coffee, social media, binge-watching, gaming, and any habit the poster clearly cannot stop despite their protestations.
