Meme lore
What is the Custom Character in Cutscene meme?
The Custom Character in Cutscene meme captures the absurd feeling of inserting a ridiculous custom-made video game character into a serious cinematic moment. The iconic image shows Elon Musk dressed as Wario sitting in a formal SNL courtroom sketch - a silly creation completely out of place in a dramatic scene.
Origin & history
The image comes from Elon Musk's May 8, 2021 hosting debut on Saturday Night Live. During a courtroom sketch, Musk appeared in a full Wario costume - yellow and purple outfit, fake mustache, and all - while seated among serious-looking actors in suits. The visual clash between a Nintendo villain cosplay and a dramatic legal setting was instantly meme-worthy.
Gamers quickly recognized the joke: it perfectly mirrors RPG and open-world games where players spend hours building absurd custom characters who then appear in serious story cutscenes. The format spread across Reddit, Twitter, and gaming communities as a caption meme for anything hilariously out of place - from bad fashion choices at formal events to random objects inserted into professional settings.
