Meme lore
What is the Will Smith Slapping Chris Rock meme?
The Will Smith Slapping Chris Rock meme captures the moment at the 2022 Oscars when Will Smith walked on stage and slapped presenter Chris Rock after a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's hair. The image is used to dramatize an over-the-top reaction to a minor insult, or to contrast a calm setup with sudden, disproportionate retaliation.
Origin & history
During the March 27, 2022 Academy Awards, comedian Chris Rock made a joke comparing Jada Pinkett Smith to G.I. Jane because of her shaved head. Will Smith initially laughed, then walked from his seat to the stage and slapped Rock across the face before returning to his row and later winning Best Actor for King Richard.

The moment also fueled debate about comedy boundaries, celebrity behavior, and live-TV chaos, keeping the image in circulation long after the ceremony ended.
