Meme lore
What is the Its Been 84 Years meme?
It's Been 84 Years is a meme based on elderly Rose from Titanic telling her story and opening with "It's been 84 years." Online, people use the line to exaggerate how long they have waited for updates, sequels, replies, or any slow-moving situation that feels like it has dragged on forever.
Origin & history
In Titanic, 101-year-old Rose Calvert begins recounting her voyage aboard the ship by telling the research crew, "It's been 84 years... and I can still smell the fresh paint." The line sets up the film's long flashback and gives Rose's memory a mythic weight.
Internet users stripped away the tragedy and kept only the hyperbole. On Twitter, Reddit, and Tumblr, "It's been 84 years" became a template for complaining about release delays, unanswered texts, loading screens, or any wait that feels disproportionately long. The joke lands because Rose delivers the line with total seriousness while the audience knows the actual wait is usually much shorter.
