Meme lore
What is the Girl Running meme?
Girl Running (also known as Chubby Bubbles Girl or Bubbles Girl) is an exploitable meme featuring a young girl in a yellow jacket running through a yard with a bubble wand, bubbles floating around her. The carefree image is photoshopped into chase scenes or labeled to show someone joyfully running toward - or away from - something.
Origin & history
The identities of the girl and photographer remain unknown, but the original photograph first appeared on 4chan's /b/ board on August 22, 2009. Users quickly began cutting out the running girl - nicknamed 'Chubbles' or 'Bubbles Girl' - and photoshopping her into movie scenes, disasters, and chase scenarios, similar to Disaster Girl and Strutting Leo.
The meme spread to Tumblr within days and gained wider attention when BuzzFeed challenged readers to submit their own edits in September 2009. Over the following decade it remained a staple exploitable format, used both for wholesome captions about running toward happiness and for absurdist edits where the girl flees from dinosaurs, celebrities, or everyday threats. The yellow jacket and bubble wand make her instantly recognizable in any composite image.
