Meme lore
What is the Cat Sniper Scope meme?
Cat Sniper Scope is a two-panel reaction and caption template that frames an ordinary or emotional cat as the target of an exaggerated sniper operation. The upper image establishes the mock-serious tactical setup, while the lower scope view delivers the punchline by zooming in on the target cat’s sad, startled, or vulnerable expression. It is commonly used for jokes about surveillance, being singled out, getting caught, or treating a minor situation as an absurdly high-stakes mission.
Origin & history
The template appears to be a stitched or edited composite rather than a single original photograph. Its upper panel shows a white-and-black cat beside a scoped rifle mounted on a bipod in a wooded setting, while its lower panel recreates a rifle-scope view aimed at a close-up of a distressed white cat. The earliest readily traceable meme usage found in search is a Reddit post from December 28, 2019, indicating that the recognizable caption format was already circulating by late 2019. The underlying photographs and the person who combined them have not been reliably identified, so the image’s deeper origin should be treated as unknown.
