Meme lore
What is the This Is Brilliant, But I Like This meme?
A two-panel preference template that praises one option as objectively excellent before admitting a personal preference for a different, often less practical or more exciting alternative. It works especially well for comparing sensible choices with emotionally appealing ones.
Origin & history
The image is a two-panel still from a Top Gear car comparison segment, with the baked captions “This is brilliant.” and “But I like this.” The contrast between objective praise and subjective preference became reusable beyond cars for jokes about products, habits, media, and everyday decisions.
