What is the Leonardo Dicaprio Laughing meme?
The Leonardo DiCaprio Laughing meme is a reaction image of DiCaprio as Calvin Candie from Django Unchained, squinting and laughing while holding a drink. It expresses gleeful mockery, condescending amusement, or satisfaction at someone else's ignorance or misfortune.
How the joke works: Put the smug setup, bad take, or warning in the top box, then reveal the target's obvious failure or self-own in the bottom box.
Where it comes from
Leonardo DiCaprio plays plantation owner Calvin Candie in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, and this still captures his derisive laugh during the film's climactic dinner confrontation. The earliest known meme usage dates to November 2017 on Tumblr, where users replaced the glass with absurd objects like Monster Energy drinks.
Popularity exploded in August 2020 on subreddits like r/dndmemes and r/memes, where the squinting laugh became shorthand for watching someone embarrass themselves. The format works both as a captioned image macro and as a Photoshop exploitable where the held object changes to match the joke.
When to use it
- Laughing at someone who fell for an obvious trap or prank
- Mocking a terrible pun or confidently wrong hot take
- Reacting when someone uses their own logic against themselves
- Expressing smug satisfaction after an 'I told you so' moment
- Edits replacing the drink to match the joke (coffee, blizzard, etc.)
