Meme lore
What is the Crying Cat meme?
Crying Cat (also known as Sad Cat or Teary Cat) is a photoshopped image of a white cat with enormous, exaggerated tears streaming down its face. It expresses mock devastation, emotional overwhelm, or relatable sadness - usually in an over-the-top, humorous way.
Origin & history
The image is an edited photo of a white cat with digitally enlarged, cartoonish tears added beneath its eyes. It emerged from the broader sad-animal meme ecosystem on Reddit and Twitter around 2019, alongside other teary-eyed cat and dog reaction images.
Users quickly adopted Crying Cat for situations that call for performative grief - bad news that is not actually tragic, nostalgia hits, or self-pity over minor inconveniences. The absurd scale of the tears makes even mundane captions feel comedically melodramatic, which is why it remains a staple sad reaction image.
