Meme lore
What is the Sad Keanu Reeves meme?
Sad Keanu is a paparazzi photo of actor Keanu Reeves sitting alone on a park bench, eating a sandwich and looking quietly melancholic. It became a symbol of loneliness, gentle sadness, and the idea that even beloved stars have down moments.
Origin & history
Splash News photographer Ron Asadorian captured the image in May 2010 of Keanu eating lunch by himself in New York. The shot's candid loneliness resonated with online audiences during a moment when Keanu was already discussed for personal hardships mentioned in interviews.
Reddit users titled posts 'I think Keanu might be the most wholesome person' and 'Sad Keanu,' turning the bench photo into a meme about existential sadness, empathy, and quiet isolation. The image later fed into broader Keanu internet lore, including Conspiracy Keanu and the 'Keanu is immortal' joke cycle of the early 2010s.
