Meme lore
What is the Rickroll (Rick Astley Singing) GIF meme?
A frame from the classic Rickroll music video, showing Rick Astley singing and dancing. Use top and bottom captions to frame a bait-and-switch, unexpected reveal, or familiar situation that leads into the song.
Origin & history
The frame is from Rick Astley's “Never Gonna Give You Up” music video, released in 1987. Online users later repurposed the video as the visual identity of the Rickroll prank, pairing ordinary-looking links or claims with an unexpected presentation of the song. This specific still is a recognizable captioned-GIF treatment of that format.
