What is the Surprised Pikachu meme?
Surprised Pikachu is a reaction-image format used to portray exaggerated shock when something predictable goes wrong. A caption typically states the setup or an obvious consequence, allowing Pikachu's expression to deliver the sarcastic punchline.
How the joke works: Put the reckless choice or ignored warning in the top box, then put its completely predictable consequence in the bottom box as Pikachu’s fake shock.
Where it comes from
The Surprised Pikachu face comes from a screenshot of the Pokemon anime series. Tumblr user Angela posted the image in 2016, and it circulated quietly before exploding on Reddit in November 2018 - especially in r/memes and r/me_irl as a punchline to two-panel jokes where the second panel shows Pikachu reacting to an obvious consequence.
The meme's core joke is ironic: someone does something reckless or foolish, then acts shocked when the predictable result happens. By 2019, "Surprised Pikachu face" had entered everyday internet vocabulary as a shorthand for fake astonishment, and redrawn HD versions spread alongside the charmingly low-res original.
