Meme lore
What is the What Is My Purpose Meme Template & meme?
The What Is My Purpose meme comes from Rick and Morty, where Rick Sanchez builds a small robot that asks the existential question 'What is my purpose?' Rick bluntly answers 'You pass butter,' leaving the robot crushed. It jokes about meaningless jobs, disappointing life answers, and asking big questions only to get a trivial reply.
Origin & history
The Butter Passing Robot appears in Rick and Morty season 1, episode 9 ('Something Ricked This Way Comes'), which aired on March 24, 2014 on Adult Swim. Rick builds the robot on a whim; when it gains sentience and asks about its purpose, Rick's deadpan 'You pass butter' and the robot's quiet 'Oh my god' became an instant quote among fans.
Clips and GIFs spread on Reddit, Tumblr, and Twitter as a template for relabeling the question and answer - replacing 'pass butter' with any mundane task, useless job title, or anticlimactic life goal. The meme peaked alongside Rick and Morty's broader cultural moment and remains a go-to format for workplace burnout, overqualified hires stuck on grunt work, and any situation where ambition meets a humiliating reality check.
