Meme lore
What is the Sundar Pichai and Sam Altman meme?
The Sundar Pichai and Sam Altman meme features the Google and OpenAI CEOs walking side by side in dark suits after a White House AI policy meeting. It is used for jokes about Big Tech rivalry, the AI arms race, and two industry titans heading to the same regulatory table with very different agendas.
Origin & history
In May 2023, President Biden hosted a meeting with top AI company leaders at the White House to discuss safety, regulation, and the rapid deployment of generative AI. Sundar Pichai of Google and Sam Altman of OpenAI were photographed walking out together - both in formal suits with visitor badges, Sundar carrying a folder and water bottle while Altman held a laptop.
The image spread quickly on Twitter and Reddit as a perfect visual for the moment: two CEOs whose companies are locked in an AI rivalry, suddenly aligned on a sidewalk after lobbying the same government. Meme makers labeled them with rival captions, partnership jokes, and commentary on Silicon Valley's relationship with Washington.
