Meme lore
What is the Sad Dog meme?
The Sad Dog meme (often called Sad Beagle or Guilty Dog) shows a small tricolor beagle puppy sitting on a blue blanket with droopy eyes and a dejected expression. It conveys guilt, shame, disappointment, or the feeling of being caught doing something wrong.
Origin & history
The Sad Beagle image began spreading online in the early 2010s, appearing in guilty-dog compilations and pet-shaming posts on Reddit and Tumblr. The puppy's remarkably human expression of sorrow - droopy eyes, hunched posture, downcast gaze - made it stand out from generic stock photos.
It evolved from "dog shaming" culture into a general reaction image for guilt, regret, and self-pity. Meme makers pair it with captions about getting caught in a lie, disappointing someone, or realizing you made a mistake you cannot undo. The blue blanket and beagle's tricolor markings became instantly recognizable markers of the format.
