Meme lore
What is the Sleeping Squidward meme?
Sleeping Squidward (also known as Squidward's Open Eyes) is a reaction image from SpongeBob SquarePants showing Squidward with his eyes closed, then snapping open in shock. The meme captures the moment you are drifting off and suddenly remember something you forgot to do.
Origin & history
The images originate from a scene in the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Home Sweet Pineapple," first aired in 1999. Squidward settles into bed only to discover SpongeBob has crawled in next to him, prompting a jolt of wide-eyed horror. Fans extracted the closed-eyes and open-eyes frames as a before-and-after reaction pair.
The meme spread through Facepunch forums as early as 2010 and resurged on Reddit around 2015–2016 with captions like "When you're about to go to sleep and you remember you have homework." It remains a staple reaction format for procrastination guilt, last-minute panic, and the dread of remembering obligations at the worst possible moment.
