Modern smartphone operating systems display a battery icon with a lightning bolt when a nearly dead device is plugged in to charge - the red segment at the bottom signaling critical power. Designers borrowed this familiar UI element for shareable graphics because almost everyone instantly reads it as 'almost out of energy but trying to recover.'
The image spread on Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram as a visual metaphor unrelated to actual phone battery life. Users post it to describe emotional exhaustion after work, depleted social batteries after parties, students surviving on little sleep during exams, or the relief of finally resting on a weekend.
