Meme lore
What is the Lemon On A Pear meme?
The Lemon On A Pear meme is a pun on Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer," showing a lemon balanced on a pear with captions like "Whoa, we're halfway there, whoah, lemon on a pear." The joke renders a misheard lyric literally as fruit on a white background.
Origin & history
The meme plays on mondegreen humor - mishearing "livin' on a prayer" as "lemon on a pear." A simple photo of a lemon stacked on a pear, captioned with the song's iconic chorus line, turns the auditory pun into a visual one. The joke only lands once the viewer connects the fruit arrangement to the Bon Jovi lyrics.
It circulated on Twitter, Facebook, and Reddit in the late 2010s and early 2020s, often sent to Bon Jovi fans as a deliberate setup where the recipient stares at the image confused until someone explains the wordplay. Know Your Meme documents it under the "Whoa, We're Halfway There" entry as part of a broader family of song-lyric pun memes.
