What is the Doge meme?
Doge is a meme featuring Kabosu, a Shiba Inu with a skeptical side-eye expression, overlaid with broken-English phrases like 'such wow' and 'very amaze' in colorful Comic Sans text. It became one of the most recognizable images in internet history and later inspired the Dogecoin cryptocurrency.
Origin & history
Japanese kindergarten teacher Atsuko Sato posted photos of her rescue Shiba Inu Kabosu on her blog in 2010. One image - Kabosu sitting sideways on a couch with raised eyebrows - was picked up by Reddit users in late 2013 and paired with Comic Sans captions written in faux-enthusiastic broken English.
The format spread rapidly across 4chan, Tumblr, and Twitter, spawning spin-offs like 'Doge 2.0' and eventually the Dogecoin cryptocurrency launched in December 2013 as a joke that became a real financial asset. Kabosu passed away in May 2024, but the template remains a foundational piece of meme culture.
