Meme lore
What is the Surprised Patrick meme?
Surprised Patrick is a reaction meme featuring Patrick Star from The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie with his mouth agape and eyes wide in shock. The cutout is often superimposed onto other images or captioned to show stunned disbelief at unexpected news or discoveries.
Origin & history
In The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, SpongeBob and Patrick sit at the edge of a cliff after their Patty Wagon falls into an abyss - both wearing exasperated, shocked expressions. An animated GIF of Patrick's face from the scene was posted to Glitter-Graphics in January 2008, and the isolated still later became a popular cutout for image macros.
By 2013, meme makers were inserting Surprised Patrick into unrelated photos and GIFs as a bait-and-switch punchline - his vacant, open-mouthed shock contrasting with mundane or absurd contexts. The format remains a go-to SpongeBob reaction nearly two decades after the film's release.
