Meme lore
What is the Disaster Girl meme?
Disaster Girl is a reaction-image template built around the contrast between a child’s knowing smirk and a serious-looking house fire in the background. Captions commonly frame the girl as secretly responsible for, amused by, or benefiting from a chaotic situation.
Origin & history
The image was taken by Zoe Roth’s father while firefighters conducted a controlled training exercise in Mebane, North Carolina. Roth’s mischievous expression, combined with the burning structure behind her, gave the photo its enduring implication that she caused or welcomed the disaster. It became a widely reused internet image, though the precise sequence of its early online circulation is unclear.
