Meme lore
What is the Robotnik Pressing The Red Button meme?
This two-panel reaction template contrasts a simple choice between red and blue buttons with Dr. Robotnik enthusiastically pressing the red one. The red button represents the tempting, chaotic, petty, or obviously worse option, while the unseen or implied blue button stands for restraint and common sense.
Origin & history
The upper panel is a stylized illustration of a hand choosing between red and blue buttons. The lower panel uses a cinematic image of Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, smiling while reaching toward a red control button. Editors paired the two scenes to turn Robotnik into the personification of choosing chaos over the sensible alternative; the precise source image edit is uncertain.
