Meme lore
What is the Cagney Carnation Angry vs Happy meme?
This two-panel Cagney Carnation template contrasts an exaggerated angry or hostile state in the top panel with a friendly, harmless-looking state in the bottom panel. It works well for jokes about hidden emotions, sudden mood changes, misleading appearances, and situations that seem sweet until they become intense.
Origin & history
Cagney Carnation is a flower boss encountered in Cuphead’s Floral Fury battle. The game’s hand-inked-cartoon presentation gives the character both a threatening attack expression and a pleasant idle expression, making screenshots of the two states useful as a visual contrast template. The source of this exact two-panel crop and its first meme usage is unclear.
