Meme lore
What is the 90% Brain Mass Missing meme?
This template repurposes a lateral skull radiograph as an exaggerated “empty brain” joke. The large dark cranial cavity is not evidence that most of the brain is missing; it is largely the normal low-contrast appearance of soft tissue and air on a projection X-ray, where bone is much more visible than brain tissue. Meme captions deliberately misread the image as “90% brain mass missing” or “no brain detected,” making it useful for jokes about bad judgment, impulsive choices, empty-headed behavior, and absurdly poor reasoning.
Origin & history
The visual source appears to be a lateral projection radiograph of a human skull, rather than a brain scan. In this type of image, dense bone appears bright while the brain and other soft tissues are not outlined with the clarity viewers may expect from CT or MRI, leaving the cranial cavity visually dark. Meme creators reinterpret that ordinary radiographic appearance as an anatomically impossible near-empty skull. The exact medical source, photographer, patient, and first meme posting remain unverified. Its joke logic is related to older “small brain” and Expanding Brain formats, but this single-image version functions independently as a blunt reaction template for calling someone foolish or mentally absent.
