Meme lore
What is the Patrick Wallet meme?
The Patrick Wallet meme is a two-panel SpongeBob SquarePants scene where Patrick Star shows an empty wallet asking for money, receives help, then opens the wallet to reveal he already had something valuable inside. It jokes about pretending to be broke while secretly hoarding snacks, luxuries, or guilty pleasures.
Origin & history
In the SpongeBob episode 'Life of Crime' (Season 2), Patrick and SpongeBob play out a petty theft bit that includes Patrick displaying an empty wallet despite having candy inside. Decades later, fans isolated the wallet gag into a standalone reaction template.
On Reddit and Twitter, users replaced the candy with everything from crypto holdings to streaming subscriptions, gaming skins, or takeout orders. The format works because Patrick's dopey sincerity makes the reveal funnier - he isn't scheming, he's just obliviously contradicting himself.
