Meme lore
What is the Ben Affleck Smoking meme?
Known as “Ben Affleck Smoking” or “Sad Affleck,” this image is a paparazzi photograph of Ben Affleck smoking outside while wearing a blue sweater and looking visibly drained. The cigarette, closed or lowered gaze, slumped posture, and dark doorway give it a strong feeling of exhaustion and quiet defeat. It is commonly captioned as a reaction to long workdays, awkward encounters, disappointing news, family obligations, stressful errands, or any situation that leaves someone silently accepting their fate.
Origin & history
The template comes from a 2016 paparazzi photo of Ben Affleck outside a building in London, wearing a blue sweater and holding a cigarette. Contemporary coverage connected the sighting with Affleck’s 44th birthday, which he spent with Jennifer Garner and their children while the couple were separated. The original photograph was circulated online by The Cut in August 2016, after which users on Twitter, Reddit, and meme pages reframed the actor’s tired expression as a visual shorthand for exhaustion, misery, and existential resignation. The exact photographer attribution is not consistently documented in meme references, although the version shown here carries a faint SplashNews.
