Meme lore
What is the So Close meme?
So Close (also known as Drunk Baby) shows a baby in a high chair reaching toward a pint of beer with a pacifier in its mouth. The humor is being tantalizingly near something you want but cannot quite grab - or the relatable urge for a drink after a long day.
Origin & history
The original photograph was submitted to Reddit's r/funny on June 25, 2012, by user MaryjaneBrewington in a post titled "She tells the worst jokes." That same day, the first Drunk Baby image macro appeared on r/AdviceAnimals, pairing the photo with captions that treat the baby like an intoxicated storyteller at a bar.
The image circulated widely through Advice Animals, Buzzfeed, and The Huffington Post in summer 2012. Beyond the drunk-baby format, the reaching hand inches from the beer makes it a natural "so close" template - almost there, but not quite.
