Meme lore
What is the What Day Is It Camel GIF meme?
The What Day Is It Camel meme (also known as Hump Day Camel or GEICO Camel) comes from a GEICO insurance commercial where a talking camel named Caleb walks through an office asking coworkers 'Guess what day it is?' on a Wednesday. It celebrates hump day - the middle of the work week - and became a catchphrase for any overly enthusiastic reminder of an obvious date or event.
Origin & history
GEICO's 'Hump Day' ad debuted in May 2013 as part of its ongoing campaign of humorous commercials. The spot features Caleb the camel interrupting office workers to celebrate Wednesday - the 'hump' you climb over mid-week - with growing irritation from everyone except one enthusiastic employee. Within weeks the ad was parodied across YouTube, Vine, and morning radio shows.
By late 2013 the camel had become shorthand for Wednesday posts on Facebook and Twitter, and GEICO even leaned into the hype with follow-up ads. Beyond hump day, remixers use the template whenever someone obnoxiously hypes an event everyone already knows is happening - birthdays, paydays, game launches, or holidays - mirroring the camel's relentless cheer against blank stares.
