Meme lore
What is the Black Cat Zoning Out GIF meme?
A reaction meme template from the 2023 “Black Cat Zoning Out” video, showing a black cat staring blankly at a tan or fluffy cat in the foreground. The still is commonly used for jokes about zoning out, dissociation, delayed reactions, silent judgment, or mentally processing an awkward situation.
Origin & history
The template comes from a TikTok video first posted on March 1, 2023, by @vivizirumugireo. The original footage shows a black cat staring at a tan or fluffy cat and then making a playful move toward it. A cropped repost published later in March 2023 helped expand its reach, while TikTok greenscreen edits and posts using the “aquatic ambience” sound popularized the blank-stare framing. This catalog image is a cropped still from that circulating video; the original uploader is identifiable, but the cats’ names and the complete filming context remain unclear.
