Burning House Girl (widely known as Disaster Girl) is a photo of four-year-old Zoë Roth smirking at the camera while a house burns behind her during a firefighter training drill. The image implies she caused the chaos behind her, making it a classic template for mischievous satisfaction amid disaster.

Origin & History

In January 2005, the Roth family in Mebane, North Carolina, walked two blocks to watch a controlled house fire set by the local fire department for training. Amateur photographer Dave Roth snapped a photo of his four-year-old daughter Zoë turning toward the camera with a devilish half-smile as flames engulfed the structure behind her.

Dave uploaded the photo - titled 'Firestarter' - to Zooomr in 2007 and submitted it to JPG Magazine's 'Emotion Capture' contest, where it was selected for publication. By October 2008, editors were photoshopping Zoë's face into historic disasters - the Titanic sinking, dinosaur extinction, world wars - and the Disaster Girl meme was born. In 2021, Zoë Roth sold the original photo as an NFT for 180 ETH, roughly $430,000.
