Buff Doge (also known as Swole Doge) is an internet meme based on the classic Doge Shiba Inu, but exaggerated into a super muscular, confident, 'alpha' version of the dog. It is frequently shown side-by-side with 'Cheems' (a smaller, softer, sad-looking Doge) to compare strength vs weakness, old vs new, or ideal expectations vs awkward reality.

Origin & History

The 'Swole Doge' character first appeared on July 7, 2019, when a Reddit user named purnya232 posted the original muscular Doge illustration to the r/Dogelore subreddit. The character combined the iconic face of Kabosu (the original Doge) with an absurdly buff humanoid body. Early iterations of the character were surprisingly wholesome, portraying him as a supportive and progressive figure rather than an aggressive one.

Months later, in February 2020, a Facebook page published an image pairing Swole Doge alongside 'Cheems' (a smaller Shiba Inu based on a dog named Balltze), establishing the beloved two-panel format. The meme exploded in popularity during May 2020 across Reddit and Twitter, becoming a universal template for comparing something strong and impressive from the past against a weaker modern equivalent.
