What is the Doge meme?

The Doge meme features Kabosu, a Shiba Inu with a skeptical sideways glance, overlaid with broken English phrases like "much wow" and "very [adjective]" in Comic Sans. It is one of the defining early-2010s internet memes and later became the mascot of the Dogecoin cryptocurrency.

Origin & History

The photo is of Kabosu, a Shiba Inu owned by Japanese kindergarten teacher Atsuko Sato. Sato posted the pictures to her blog in February 2010; the sideways, skeptical look became the definitive Doge face after the images spread on Reddit's r/DogsInClothing and Tumblr in 2013.

The broken-English "doge speak" style - "much," "very," "such," "wow" in rainbow Comic Sans - defined early Tumblr humor. In December 2013, programmers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer launched Dogecoin using Kabosu's face as its logo, cementing Doge as both meme history and crypto culture. Kabosu died in May 2024, but the template remains iconic.
