What is the Thousand-Yard Stare meme?
Thousand-Yard Stare (also called Traumatized Soldier or the 2,000 Yard Stare) is a single-panel reaction cutout of a dirt-smeared Marine in an M1 helmet staring hollowly at the viewer. Captions name the trigger above and whose haunted reaction we’re seeing below—or stack both lines above the face. The face carries the punchline; text should stay short so the eyes stay readable.
Origin & history
Thomas C. Lea III painted the Marine after witnessing the 1944 Battle of Peleliu; the work entered the U.S. Army art collection and is treated as public-domain U.S. government work. The meme blank is a cropped bust cutout on a plain white field (not the full jungle battlefield painting). Artist inscription “Tom Lea / PELELIU / SEPT 1944” remains visible on the cutout.
