Origin & history
The penguin photograph was taken by nature photographer George F. Mobley for National Geographic's Adélie penguin fact sheet. The image first appeared in Socially Awkward Penguin macros on 4chan's /b/ board as early as May 2009, during the explosion of Advice Animal formats like Advice Dog and Courage Wolf.
The meme spread to Reddit by late 2009, spawned dedicated Tumblr blogs and Quickmeme pages by 2010, and was featured on Buzzfeed and Smosh. In 2015, Getty Images pursued copyright claims against commercial use of the photo, prompting many sites to switch to illustrated penguin alternatives. Despite that, the format remains one of the most recognizable templates from the Advice Animals era.
